Public health practical experience (anaemia)

** report 5-2008

We conducted an experience for testing the low cost equipment developed Dr. Paulo Gomes, which makes able the measure of the hemoglobine level. Together with the development of the equipment Dr. Paulo's team also created a methodology how to fight against anaemia, which joins activities of mibilizing local communities, explanations about anaemia and how to improve alimental habits, etc. One positive point of their methodology was to conduct the experience into the schools, in front of the mothers and teachers, so that we believe that this approach reinforce the involvement of the mothers in the process.
The whole experience was very successful. It was conducted in 4 localities, and up to now we have already the final data from two experiences, one in Ilha Bela (an island in São Paulo) and the second one in Santa Luzia do Itanhy.
In Ilha Bela the level of children with anaemia was around 19% and it was reduced to 4,8% in 4 months. In Santa Luzia the level was around 23% and it was reduced to 4,6% also in 4 months.
We can now consider we have a first technology ready to be disseminate in other context, as it is well systematized. Now we are proposing to the Brazilian Ministry of Health to apply a similar approach to the whole state, having a milestone to reduce the level of anaemia, within students, to a level lower then 5% and to create a local governance that make possible to maintain this level when we left the community.
